Opening on January 30 – exhibition on display until March 21, 2026
With the exhibition “Bird Flights”, artist Jörg Bussmann new and earlier works at Raum für Kunst Darmstadt from January 31 to March 21, 2026. Thematically, the exhibition is linked to the book of the same name by philosopher Vilém Flusser (1920–1991) and explores questions of space, movement, and perception.
Artistic approach to space and movement
The exhibition takes Flusser's analysis of the myth of bird flight as its starting point. Bussmann picks up on the philosophical idea that, despite technological achievements like the airplane, humans continue to ascribe a special fascination to natural flight. The flying bird represents free movement in three dimensions, while human perception and movement mostly remain bound to two dimensions.
Bussmann understands sculptural work as a way to overcome this limitation. Hands, gestures, and materials become means of spatial exploration. Sculpture thus appears as a "materialized image of human possibilities.".
Delicate sculptures from several series
The exhibition features object-like sculptures from various series, including
“Kamerabau” (1996–1998),
“Gestures and Folds” (1996–1998),
“hominesfabri” (1998–2025)
and “con legno” (2018–2025).
Bussmann uses materials such as wood, fabric, paper, chalk, adhesives, and pigments . His working method is deliberately associative and playful – he understands play as a central tool for gaining knowledge.
