Martina Hammel's exhibition addresses flight, injustice, and Europe's responsibility
Darmstadt. With the exhibition "flight | for the right to have rights," the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (EHD) starting Monday, October 20 , 2025. The opening will take place at 6 p.m. in the Walther-Rathgeber-Haus at Zweifalltorweg 12 .
Political art about global connections
artist Martina Hammel combines striking images and texts that illuminate the connection between lifestyles in the Global North and the root causes of migration in the Global South. Her series of works address topics such as biofuel production, land grabbing, water scarcity , and the European border regime .
“For me, the works are often a coping strategy, a way to deal with the issues,” Hammel explains. “They are an exploration of the effects of consumption, political responsibility, and human suffering – from deaths in the Mediterranean to the structural causes of global inequality.”
University sets an example for social justice
“With this exhibition, we are making the topic of flight and migration visible at the university over a longer period,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. Ulrike Manz . The EHD sees itself as a SAGE university with a focus on social, labor, health, and educational sciences and advocates for participation and social justice .
The exhibition also marks the start of a new round of the training program for volunteers working with refugees , which the university offers in cooperation with the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt Volunteer Center .
Exhibition open until January 2026
The exhibition can be until January 30, 2026 in the Walther-Rathgeber-Haus , the lecture building of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, and is free of charge .
