Martina Hammel's exhibition addresses flight, injustice and Europe's responsibility
Darmstadt. With the exhibition "Flucht | für das Recht, rechte zu haben" (Flight | For the Right to Have Rights), the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt (EHD) starting Monday, October 20, 2025. The opening begins at 6 p.m. in the Walther-Rathgeber-Haus at Zweifalltorweg 12 .
Political art about global connections
artist Martina Hammel combines striking images and texts that illuminate the connection between lifestyles in the Global North and the causes of displacement in the Global South. Her series addresses topics such as agrofuel production, land grabbing, water scarcity , and the European border regime .
"For me, the works are often a coping strategy for dealing with the issues," explains Hammel. "They are an exploration of the effects of consumption, political responsibility, and human suffering—from deaths in the Mediterranean to the structural causes of global inequality."
University sets an example for social justice
"With this exhibition, we are raising awareness of the topic of flight and migration at the university over a longer period of time," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Ulrike Manz . The EHD sees itself as a SAGE university with a focus on social sciences, labor, health, and educational sciences , and advocates for participation and social justice .
The exhibition also marks the start of a new round of the training program for volunteers working with refugees , which the university offers in cooperation with the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt and the Volunteer Center Darmstadt .

The exhibition can be seen until 30 January 2026 in the Walther-Rathgeber-Haus is accessible free of charge .
