Opening and discussion evening with Mayor Akdeniz on catcalling and everyday sexism
As announced by the Women's Office of the City of Darmstadt, the exhibition "Together Against Sexism" will be on display at the Justus Liebig House from November 24 to December 12. It is being held to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is observed annually on November 25. The Women's Office invites everyone to the official opening on Tuesday, November 26, at 5 p.m. for a vernissage with Mayor and Head of Women's Affairs Barbara Akdeniz, followed by a discussion entitled "Everyday Sexism? Catcalling in Focus."
Exhibition for awareness, dialogue and attitude
Akdeniz emphasizes that sexism is present both structurally and in everyday language. The city of Darmstadt has been part of the "Together Against Sexism" alliance since 2021. The exhibition provides information, data, and facts about the manifestations and effects of sexism and encourages awareness and dialogue. Tips on how to confront sexism in everyday life are also included.
Support from local advice centers
The exhibition also highlights the connections between sexism and gender-based violence. Part of the presentation includes the services offered by the "Violence Protection Network – Prevention and Protection against Domestic and Sexualized Violence against Women, Girls, and Boys in the City of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt-Dieburg District." Information and contact persons from the Darmstadt Women's Shelter, Wildwasser e.V., Mäander gGmbH, and Pro Familia gGmbH will be available on site.
Discussion evening on catcalling
Following the opening, an expert panel discussion will take place in cooperation with the HESSEN Network Against Violence. The topic, "Catcalling," will examine abusive comments, gestures, and language in public spaces as a form of everyday sexism. Panelists include Mayor Barbara Akdeniz, Senior Public Prosecutor Marion Denny from the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office, and representatives from the Catcalls of Darmstadt initiative. An open discussion will follow.
