The graphic collection displays 120 works on facial expressions, identity, and self-presentation
The Hessian State Museum Darmstadt is presenting the special exhibition of its Graphic Collection , "Face2Face," only until Sunday, February 8, 2026. On display are 120 drawings, prints, posters, and photographs by 78 artists who explore facial expressions, facial features, and the meaning of the face in different eras.
Faces between perception and self-presentation
Faces are ubiquitous: we encounter them in newspapers and magazines, on billboards, and on social networks like Instagram and TikTok. From an early age, people learn to read faces, interpret glances, and recognize emotions. "Face2Face" explores seeing and being seen, the interplay between one's own face, the countenance of another, and the reflection in a mirror.
The exhibition makes it clear that a face only exists through the gaze of others. Especially in the digital age, the face has become a central medium of expression, self-presentation, and communication.
From the Renaissance to the present day
The works on display span from the Renaissance to the present day . Portraits from different centuries enter into a dialogue: Romantic depictions appear surprisingly modern, while contemporary works incorporate historical references. This reveals how much faces reflect their respective eras – and yet remain timeless.
