Title confirmed for another two years – commitment continuously expanded since 2013
a Fairtrade City for another two years . Fairtrade Germany confirmed the award, which the city first received in 2013. Darmstadt thus continues to meet all five criteria of the Fairtrade Towns campaign.
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasized the significance of the award:
“This confirmation of the award is a wonderful testament to the sustainable integration of fair trade in Darmstadt. Local stakeholders from politics, civil society, and business are working closely together here toward a common goal. It is excellent that Darmstadt belongs to the international network of Fairtrade Towns. We will continue to work to promote fair trade at the local level.”
Successes from twelve years as a Fairtrade Town
Since the first award ceremony in 2013, Darmstadt has steadily expanded its commitment:
- In 2024, 1,254 Fairtrade chocolates were sold Darmstadt Shop
- The introduction of "Fair Football" brought the topic into the sport.
- The Victoria School celebrated its 10th anniversary as a "Fair School" in 2024.
- Numerous restaurants in Darmstadt have switched to Fairtrade products in recent years.
Think globally – act locally
The campaign offers Darmstadt concrete options for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . Under the motto "think globally, act locally," the city is contributing to the promotion of fair trade structures.
Darmstadt is one of more than 820 Fairtrade Towns in Germany . Worldwide, there are over 2,000 Fairtrade Towns in 36 countries , including Great Britain, Sweden, Brazil, and Lebanon.
