Title extended for another two years – commitment spanning a decade
Fairtrade District title has been renewed for another two years. This means the district has now been part of the worldwide Fairtrade Towns campaign for ten years and was the second district in Hesse to receive this distinction in 2015. District Administrator Thomas Will presented the updated certificate to the district's Fairtrade Officer, Stefan Leimbach.
The district is committed to Fairtrade in order to support producer groups in developing countries. Fairly traded products – such as those bearing the Fairtrade , GEPA , or El Puente – ensure better working conditions and incomes for smallholder farmers and plantation workers. At the same time, forced and child labor are combated, and environmentally friendly farming methods without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms are promoted.
District Administrator Will emphasizes: "Fair trade is an important instrument for combating poverty and for ecologically sustainable production standards – and it also contributes to regional economic development."
A key objective remains to regularly raise public awareness of the importance of fair trade products and to encourage their purchase. The district's

The district places great emphasis on cooperation in the Fairtrade sector. Together with the Fairtrade towns of Bischofsheim and Büttelborn , and as a member of RheinMainFair eV, additional opportunities for action arise. For example, the Supply Chain Act initiative in the Groß-Gerau district with trade unions, churches, municipalities, the district adult education center, and other partners to raise awareness of exploitation and unfair production conditions both in the Global South and domestically.

its municipal procurement center social, ecological, and innovative requirements, as well as adherence to collective bargaining agreements and minimum wages, are among the criteria, along with environmental friendliness, resource conservation, and waste prevention. Twelve municipalities within the district are collaborating on this initiative.
