From August 25th, clear parking regulations and widened sidewalks will apply
DARMSTADT-WIXHAUSEN – The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, will introduce a new traffic regulation on Falltorstraße (K 165) starting Monday, August 25, 2025. The aim is to increase traffic safety, distribute public space more equitably, and significantly improve comfort for pedestrians.
The redesign, which was previously presented to the Wixhausen local council and supplemented with suggestions from the population, includes marking work and new signage.
“With this redesign, we are significantly improving safety and comfort for pedestrians. At the same time, we are creating clear and comprehensible parking rules and making the street more usable for all road users. In this way, we are contributing to greater peace and harmony in the district,” explained Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey .
More space on the sidewalk, clearly defined parking areas
Previously, up to 30 vehicles used the sidewalk along a historic cobblestone line for parking. This often left the sidewalk only 80 centimeters to 1.30 meters wide – too narrow for safe and accessible use, especially for children on their way to school.
In the future, 23 clearly marked parking spaces be available on the north side of the one-way street. Narrow sections – for example, in front of the kebab shop – will be protected from illegal parking by structural measures. The roadway will be widened at narrow points from approximately 3.70 meters to at least 3.75 meters, and in most places even 4 meters. The sidewalks will be at least 1.70 meters wide, and in many places up to 2.50 meters wide.
