Sperm whales, Jules Verne and wasps – free events at the BUND Centre for Urban Nature
The BUND Darmstadt, in cooperation with the Darmstadt Adult Education Center, invites you to three free lectures at the BUND Center for Urban Nature in February and March. The focus will be on marine research, literary history, and native and invasive insect species. All events begin at 7 p.m. and will also be streamed online.
Sperm whales – myth and reality
The series kicks off on Tuesday, February 24th, with the lecture "Sperm Whales – Myth and Reality." The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is considered the largest toothed whale, an impressive deep diver, and one of the largest living predators. At the same time, it is firmly rooted in cultural history – for example, through the novel "Moby-Dick.".
Biologist and science journalist Bettina Wurche reports on current research into the behavior, communication, and culture of animals. Modern technologies and AI-supported analyses are opening up new insights into the "language" of marine mammals.
Jules Verne and the discovery of marine research
On Tuesday, March 3rd, the lecture “Jules Verne and the Discovery of Marine Research – Science and Science Fiction” will take place. The focus will be on the French writer Jules Verne (1828–1905), who is considered the founder of the scientific novel with science fiction elements.
Using his work "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" as a starting point, the discussion will explore how much real science and technology is incorporated into his novels and where the line between science and fiction lies. The speaker will again be Bettina Wurche.
Don't be afraid of wasps and hornets
On Tuesday, March 10th, the program features a practical topic: "No fear of wasps and hornets – native species and the Asian hornet, conservation status and prevention." Experts from BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) will explain how social wasps live, which species are perceived as a nuisance in late summer, and how conflicts can be avoided.
The increasing prevalence of the invasive Asian hornet will also be addressed. Participants will also receive advice on how to prevent nesting, for example, in roller shutter boxes.
All three lectures will take place at the BUND Center for Urban Nature, Klappacher Straße 27, 64285 Darmstadt (entrance via the Orangerie, first gate on the left) and will be streamed online. Participation is free of charge. Further information and the access link to the web conference can be found at www.bund-darmstadt.de/webkonferenz .
