Telekom continues expansion, Deutsche Glasfaser withdraws
The city of Weiterstadt is providing an update on the progress of the comprehensive fiber optic rollout throughout the city. According to the city, Telekom Deutschland is continuing to drive the expansion forward in almost all districts. The goal is a high-performance and future-proof internet infrastructure for private households and businesses.
The Weiterstadt-based company Kocaman Bau was commissioned to carry out the construction work. Awarding the contract to a local company is intended to ensure short communication channels and simultaneously strengthen the regional economy.
Deutsche Glasfaser ends project
Deutsche Glasfaser has announced its withdrawal from the fiber optic project in Weiterstadt. The company cites increased capital costs and economic uncertainties as the reasons for the withdrawal. Its focus will now be on projects already under contract.
According to the company, customers who have previously signed a preliminary contract will be informed in writing by the end of March.
ENTEGA is negotiating fiber optic tariffs
The energy supplier ENTEGA is currently in talks with Telekom. The aim is to be able to offer fiber optic tariffs via the existing infrastructure in the future.
Expansion planned in several city districts
Construction work in the first development area – in Braunshardt and Weiterstadt-West – is scheduled to resume at the end of March or beginning of April. Work is then planned for the rest of the city center as well as the districts of Schneppenhausen and Gräfenhausen.
In the Riedbahn district, the NGA Zweckverband Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg (NGA Zweckverband Darmstadt-Dieburg District Association) is undertaking the subsidized expansion. The association is working with ENTEGA as its contractual partner.
Planning for this subsidized expansion is currently ongoing at the district level and at ENTEGA.
Open access model for the Telekom network
Deutsche Telekom's fiber optic network is operated under an open-access model. This means that other telecommunications companies can also use the infrastructure, provided that corresponding cooperation agreements exist.
The city regularly publishes further information on fiber optic expansion, contact persons, timelines and funding programs on its website.
