Paintings from "Legacies & Apparitions" from March 28 to May 2, 2026
Berlin-based artist Fides Becker presents her exhibition "Boudoir" at Raum für Kunst in Darmstadt from March 28 to May 2, 2026. The exhibition features works from her series "Legacies & Appearances." The opening reception will take place on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 7 p.m.
The title "Boudoir" refers to intimate, private spaces. Becker's paintings depict morbid interiors and objects bearing traces of human presence. Works with titles such as "Red Round Bed," "Curtain," or "Brown Sleeping Bag" make rooms appear as if they have just been vacated.
At the heart of her artistic work lies the question of identity as an interplay between personal development and external influences. Becker understands her painting as a form of cultural anthropological research. In fragmentary simultaneity, objects, colors, and forms overlap on the canvas. Different eras, societal attributions, as well as reality and fiction, enter into a relationship with one another.
A characteristic feature is the use of highly diluted paint, which runs over the raw canvas during the painting process. This reveals traces of the creation process, alluding to transience and memory. The layering of traditional and contemporary materials creates a three-dimensional effect with a nuanced interplay of light and shadow.
Fides Becker was born in Worms in 1962 and lives and works in Berlin. She studied, among other things, painting and graphic arts at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, and the Berlin University of the Arts. She has been a member of the Darmstadt Secession since 2012.
