Volunteer engagement at record levels
The Groß-Gerau volunteer fire department looks back on a busy year in 2024. The operational unit, in particular, had to contend with a steadily increasing number of call-outs. With a total of 272 incidents, a new record was reached – double the number of call-outs compared to 2014.
Particularly noteworthy: Almost half of the call-outs involved technical assistance, especially in road traffic. Firefighting operations accounted for 41 of the alarms, while 107 false alarms were recorded. Thirteen people were rescued thanks to the courageous intervention of the fire department, while for two people, all help came too late. In total, the members of the operational unit contributed 7,899.3 volunteer hours – a testament to the enormous commitment of these volunteers.
"The growing challenges, whether from extreme weather events or increased bureaucratic requirements, do not make the work of our fire department any easier. But the dedication of our volunteers shows that we are reliably there for the citizens even in difficult times," emphasizes Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau, and expressly thanks the firefighters for their outstanding commitment.
The fire department also had an active year in the area of youth development. The Groß-Gerau youth fire brigade contributed 1,788 hours of service, with the young members participating in competitions, receiving first aid training, and completing an impressive final exercise during a North Frost in December. With 28 members – 19 boys and 9 girls – interest in youth development remains strong. Particularly encouraging is the children's fire brigade
The "Firefighting Mice" group had 24 members and, with 20 children on the waiting list, was experiencing high demand. The fire department leadership was particularly proud of the commitment of the honorary and senior members: "Despite their well-deserved retirement, they still actively participate in training the Firefighting Mice."
The Groß-Gerau volunteer fire department impressively demonstrates that voluntary commitment remains indispensable in a modern society. The increasing number of deployments, as well as the consistently high level of training and recruitment efforts, attest to the strong dedication of the firefighters who ensure the safety of Groß-Gerau every day.
