The state of Hesse is supporting the accommodation of a new disaster relief vehicle with 100,100 euros
To strengthen disaster relief efforts, the Hessian Minister of the Interior and Homeland Security, Roman Poseck, a grant award of €100,100 to Mayor Marcus Kretschmann . The funds will be used to expand the vehicle bay of the Riedstadt-Leeheim volunteer fire department to house a new state-owned disaster relief logistics vehicle (GW-L KatS)
The emergency vehicle – a Unimog with a loading crane, winch, and trailer – was relocated to Leeheim in September 2024 and is equipped with modules for forest fires, evacuations, and floods . The aim is to keep the disaster relief units in the Groß-Gerau district flexible and ready for deployment.
Riedstadt as a strong location for disaster relief
Mayor Kretschmann emphasized the great importance of volunteer work:
“Our volunteer fire department is a flagship for Riedstadt. In the Leeheim district, there are 61 active firefighters for around 4,400 residents, and in the entire city, there are around 250 for almost 25,000 residents. We are particularly proud of our children's and youth fire brigade – they secure our future.”

District Fire Inspector Friedrich Schmidt also praised the location:
"Riedstadt has the most efficient volunteer fire department in the district. We knew that there were experts here who could safely operate the new crane, for example." Since the district is responsible for housing the vehicles, it will cover the difference between the district's costs and the state funding.
The state is making targeted investments in municipal protection
Minister Roman Poseck expressly thanked the emergency services:
“Strong fire and disaster protection is essential to protect people in emergencies – whether fires, severe weather, or accidents. That is why the Hessian state government is investing specifically in equipment and infrastructure.” Around 69 million euros been earmarked for fire and disaster protection in Hesse for the year 2025.
