The final days of 2024 and the start of the new year in Darmstadt and the surrounding area were marked by various incidents. From fires and burglaries to property damage caused by fireworks, the police and emergency services were extremely busy. Here is a selection of the incidents:
Basement fire in Darmstadt-Kranichstein on December 30th
On Monday evening (December 30th) at 8:27 p.m., a fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building on Wickopweg in Darmstadt-Kranichstein. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and it produced a large amount of smoke. Twenty-five residents were examined at the scene for possible smoke inhalation, and two of them were taken to the hospital for further evaluation. One apartment was rendered uninhabitable by the fire, but the remaining residents were able to return to their apartments. The damage is estimated at at least €150,000. Emergency personnel from the Darmstadt Fire Department, the volunteer fire departments from Arheilgen and the city center, as well as ambulances and a paramedic, were on the scene. The investigation is being handled by the Darmstadt-Dieburg Police Directorate's Specialist Unit 10.
Balcony fire in Bartningstrasse on New Year's Eve
In Darmstadt-Kranichstein, a balcony on Bartningstrasse caught fire around 12:15 a.m. on New Year's Eve. The flames briefly threatened to spread to the adjacent apartment on the third floor. Thanks to the swift response of the Darmstadt Fire Department, the fire was extinguished by 12:45 a.m. The damage is estimated at approximately €30,000.
Property damage caused by fireworks on Bessunger Straße
On the night of January 1st, a cigarette machine on Bessunger Straße was forcibly opened using a firework. The perpetrators, whose identities are still unknown, stole the contents of the machine and also damaged a parked car with the explosion. Witnesses observed three men, approximately 20 years old, dressed in dark clothing and wearing caps, fleeing in the direction of Moltkestraße. The police are asking for any information regarding the perpetrators.
Burglary in Cherry Avenue
Between December 26 and January 1, unknown perpetrators gained access to a terraced house on Kirschenallee in Darmstadt-Nord. They forced open the patio door and searched the rooms for valuables. The burglars escaped with jewelry, cash, and electronic devices. Witnesses are asked to report any observations to Police Station 21/22 in Darmstadt.
