Widening the ditch is intended to provide relief during heavy rain
The city of Griesheim is currently implementing flood prevention measures in the Flechsgraben area. These measures are part of the municipal flood prevention plan and are intended to better protect the southwest residential area from heavy rainfall.
Background of the construction work
The drainage plan for the southwest residential area envisions directing excess rainwater into the Flechsgraben ditch. To ensure controlled drainage, work is currently underway to widen the ditch and construct two weirs that will divert the water into newly created floodplains.
The construction site was set up last year, initial clearing work was carried out, and preparations were made. The high groundwater level is currently complicating construction, but this was anticipated due to the time of year.
Delays due to weather are possible
Construction was originally scheduled for completion in April 2025. However, due to the persistent wet weather, completion is expected to be delayed. Construction work is heavily dependent on rainfall and temperatures, which means that short-term interruptions are possible.
Planned measures at a glance
- Widening of the Flechsgraben: The ditch will be widened so that a 5-year rain event can flow away to the Küchlergraben without flooding.
- Creation of additional floodplains: These are intended to prevent the water from flowing uncontrollably towards Riedstadt.
- Widening to a length of 500 meters: A parallel path is eliminated to give the trench more space.
- Preservation of the concrete shells: These reduce the infiltration of water into the groundwater and remain intact.
- Slope adjustments: The top edges of the slopes are raised in places to prevent flooding on agricultural land.
- Targeted flooding areas: In the west of the ditch, forest and meadow areas are being created that can be deliberately flooded during high water.
Impacts on agriculture and population
Local farmers have been informed about the construction work. During the construction period, the field path along the Flechsgraben will be only partially accessible. The town of Griesheim and the construction company are making every effort to minimize disruption.
