Local authorities view new Fraport plans critically – northwest departure route more heavily impacted
The Rhine-Main Municipal Working Group (KAGZRM) warns of a potential increase in aircraft noise pollution due to the new operating concept from Fraport and the German Air Navigation Services (DFS). The plan apparently involves increasingly handling air traffic via the northwest departure route – with far-reaching consequences for the affected municipalities.
Flörsheim, Hattersheim, Hochheim, and parts of Mainz and Wiesbaden, in particular, fear significant additional noise pollution if the plans are implemented. These municipalities were assured during the planning approval process for the Northwest Runway some 20 years ago that takeoffs in westerly winds would primarily take place via the southern approach route to avoid constant noise pollution from both operating directions.
Criticism of Fraport and DFS: Promises not kept
The KAGZRM criticizes the fact that this promise has been increasingly undermined in recent years. More and more takeoffs are now taking place via the northwest departure route, which the working group attributes to faulty planning.
"The originally planned figure of 126 flight movements per hour cannot realistically be achieved with the southern bypass," stated the board of KAGZRM. This flawed planning has already led to dangerous near misses and unnecessary noise pollution in the past.
Fears of a "noise disaster"
The working group is particularly critical of the now-publicized intention to handle all takeoffs from the parallel runway system (center runway) via the northwest departure route during the busy summer months – especially at peak times. This could lead to an "absolute noise disaster" for the affected communities.
The board of KAGZRM speaks of an "outrageous incident" and "another breach of promise by the airport operator." They announce political and legal resistance against any further escalation of the already tense situation.
"The plans must be carefully examined and critically questioned. The protection of the population must be the top priority," the working group emphasizes.
