The city of Griesheim is relying on animal-based landscape management for the natural regeneration of the city forest
The six donkeys of the Griesheim landscape conservation farm have moved to a new area of operation this week: An area west of the football pitch now serves as a grazing area as part of forest management. The aim is to suppress the rapidly growing reed grass promote the natural regeneration of the forest
Nature conservation with four-legged friends
Since 2022, the city of Griesheim has been using a sustainable method for landscape management: Donkeys graze specifically selected areas in the city forest, thus contributing to the restoration of a diverse forest floor. Earlier this year, they were already active in areas near the Gerhart-Hauptmann-School (Kirschberg) and at the forest playground .
Grazing helps create new herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees
Visitors welcome – but please without food
The donkeys are clearly visible from the path and can be observed. However, the landscape conservation farm strongly requests that visitors refrain from feeding .
