Snowfall and frost lead to late departures on Wednesday evening
On Wednesday evening, January 7th, weather-related flight delays occurred again at Frankfurt Airport. Extensive de-icing measures were required on numerous aircraft due to snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.
The resulting delays necessitated additional takeoff permits. The Hessian air traffic control authority granted a total of 29 special permits for departures between 11:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. The last takeoff was at 11:55 p.m.
Night flight restrictions at Frankfurt Airport
At Frankfurt Airport, night flight restrictions are in place between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Delayed flights scheduled to arrive before 11:00 p.m. are permitted to land until midnight, provided the delay is not due to scheduling issues.
Delayed departures are also possible until midnight, but each requires separate approval. A prerequisite is that the reasons for the delay are beyond the control of the respective airline, such as weather conditions like snow or ice.
