Lidberg's early brace puts Lilies on the road to victory
After four defeats without scoring a goal, SV Darmstadt 98 made an impressive comeback, securing an important home victory with a strong performance. The Lilies defeated FC Schalke 04 2-0 (2-0), ending their goal drought in impressive fashion.
The home game against Schalke began with a dream start: After just three minutes, Isac Lidberg broke through on the wing and fired a powerful shot into the far corner to give his team an early lead. Only two minutes later, the Swede had the Böllenfalltor fans cheering again: Luca Marseiler played a precise pass, which Lidberg coolly chipped over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. With this furious start, SV 98 laid the foundation for their success early on.
The home side remained the more active team and conceded very little defensively. Another shot from Andreas Müller (7th minute) missed the target, but Darmstadt controlled the game comfortably. In the second half, Darmstadt defended their lead with great commitment and allowed the visitors few chances.
Schalke had to play the final minutes with ten men after Grüger was sent off in the 76th minute with a second yellow card. Six minutes from time, Hornby tried his luck with a curling shot, but this effort also went wide (84'). However, this did nothing to change the fact that Darmstadt secured a well-deserved victory, comfortably seeing out the win and thus claiming three important points.
With this victory, SV Darmstadt 98 have created some breathing room at the bottom of the table and sent an important message in their fight to avoid relegation. A courageous performance, a dream start, and a focused defensive effort made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of football at the Böllenfalltor stadium.
