The science city of Darmstadt honors long-standing commitment to the city partnerships with Liepāja and Saanen
As part of the European Weekend, Mayor Hanno Benz honored two individuals for their exceptional commitment to international city partnerships. Dagmar Metzger , Chairwoman of the Darmstadt Initiative for Liepāja e. V., and Walter Felix Friendship Plaque of the City of Darmstadt on Saturday, May 24 .
“With great personal commitment, both have made an outstanding contribution to strengthening the town twinning partnerships and have thus set a valuable example of lived European friendship and community,” said Mayor Benz at the award ceremony during the farewell dinner for guests from the partner cities.
Commitment to the European ideal
Dagmar Metzger has headed the Darmstadt Initiative for Liepāja , which has been promoting partnership and exchange with the Latvian city since 1996, has been instrumental in its success. Under her leadership, numerous aid projects have been initiated, relief supplies organized, and the association's membership increased to 70. Benz praised her "impressive work" and emphasized the importance of civic engagement, especially during times of societal challenges.
Walter Felix was honored for his many years of service to the town twinning program with Saanen . For over 15 years, he volunteered his time to promote exchange and cooperation between the two towns. Mayor Benz particularly emphasized Felix's role as a bridge-builder and reliable contact person: "Your commitment is a valuable example of European friendship in action."
The awarding of the friendship plaques underlines the importance of civic engagement for international understanding and a peaceful Europe – a central concern of Darmstadt's city partnership work.
