The planning met with significant reservations from the outset
Mayor and Head of Economic Affairs Hanno Benz welcomes Aldi Süd's decision not to build the planned second Aldi branch in the Arheilgen district. The mayor had pursued this matter with considerable political force against Aldi Süd.
He thus emphatically contradicts Planning Director Kolmer: there was indeed political pressure from the mayor to abandon these plans. The original plan, a corresponding resolution by the Darmstadt City Council, and the building permit issued by the city envisioned the construction of this branch on Frankfurter Landstraße, but it was controversially discussed from the outset, particularly in Arheilgen. Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes: "Once again, a plan that was developed without citizen participation has failed." The mayor thanked the IGAB (Independent Citizens' Association) for their unwavering commitment to this issue. Mayor Hanno Benz continues: "As a city, we naturally have an interest in Aldi Süd continuing to invest in Darmstadt. I will therefore remain in contact with those responsible. Another meeting has already been scheduled; the next exchange will take place at the beginning of February."
