The science city of Darmstadt will again receive funding for barrier-free adaptations in owner-occupied residential property
In 2025, homeowners in Darmstadt can again benefit from state funding for the conversion of their owner-occupied residential property to be accessible for people with disabilities. The state of Hesse is providing a total of €3.6 million for this purpose. There will be no specific allocation to individual municipalities – funding will be awarded based on the number of applications received and individual assessments.
Eligibility for funding requires a disability rating (GdB) of at least 50 percent and a care level of at least 2. The amount of funding is calculated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type and scope of the structural modifications.
Mayor and Head of Social Affairs Barbara Akdeniz emphasizes the importance of the measure: “Promoting independent living is very important for people with disabilities. Through structural modifications, living in familiar surroundings can often be made possible in the long term – with all its social contacts and familiar environment.”
Typical measures include the installation of elevators or stairlifts, bathroom modifications, and barrier-free conversion of doors, thresholds, or maneuvering areas. The Housing Office of the City of Darmstadt offers individual consultations.
Last year, around €31,400 from the funding program flowed to Darmstadt. This funding supported projects including the installation of three elevators, a bathroom renovation, and a stairlift.
