Federal and state programs support social and sustainable urban development in two Darmstadt neighborhoods.
As the city of Darmstadt announced, State Minister Kaweh Mansoori presented grant awards from the federal-state programs "Social Cohesion" and "Growth and Sustainable Renewal" €1.8 million will be invested in the Akazienweg/Waldkolonie and Kapellplatz/Woogsviertel/Ostbahnhof .
The Akazienweg/Waldkolonie area was included in the "Social Cohesion" program for the first time.
Support for sustainable development in the neighborhoods
Mayor Hanno Benz thanked State Minister Mansoori for the funding and emphasized the importance of the programs for Darmstadt's urban development. The projects are being overseen within the city council primarily by Deputy Mayor Barbara Akdeniz and City Councillor Michael Kolmer.
"With these funds, we can further develop our neighborhoods sustainably and bring social, ecological, economic, and community aspects closer together in the districts," said Benz.
Neighborhood management and community workshop for Akazienweg/Waldkolonie
For the new development area Akazienweg/Waldkolonie, the establishment of a neighborhood management system planned. This includes:
- a district management
- a neighborhood workshop as a local contact point
The neighborhood management team will coordinate the entire funding process. The neighborhood workshop, in turn, serves as an easily accessible hub for networking, consultation, and participation. It will support the development of an integrated urban development concept and subsequently assist in the implementation of the measures.
Darmstadt impresses in selection process
The concept was developed by the Office for Social Planning (Department II) and the Urban Planning Office (Department III) and submitted to the state. Of 21 applicant municipalities, ten were selected – including Darmstadt with the Akazienweg/Waldkolonie area.
The "Social Cohesion" program supports municipalities in reducing urban planning deficiencies and promotes projects that social integration, educational opportunities and participation , and enable the inclusion of all population groups.
