The "Weiterstadt WIRkt" network strengthens community spirit with a participatory event for Neighborhood Day
Under the motto "Flowers say more than words," "Weiterstadt WIRkt" network set a visible example of neighborly support and community spirit . As part of Neighborhood Day , from May 23rd to 26th, 2025, volunteers, city employees, and children distributed around 1,000 flowers in all districts of Weiterstadt – as a gesture of appreciation and an invitation to connect.
The idea: Each person received two flowers – one to keep, the other to give to a neighbor. The campaign started on Friday in Weiterstadt-Mitte and ended on Monday in Schneppenhausen.
Flowers as a door opener for encounters
“Normally, people approach you to donate or buy something,” said one surprised passerby. “This kind gesture really touched me.” Even kindergarten children participated, carefully choosing a flower – perhaps for their own mother or a neighbor. The initiative quickly became a conversation starter – about successful neighborhoods , community life, and dealing with everyday conflicts .
Mayor Ralf Möller , full-time staff, volunteers and children from municipal daycare centers, the youth center (Juze), youth services and the refugee accommodation made the campaign a visible success.
Engagement across all generations
The initiative was supported by the Municipal Alliance for Diversity and Participation , organized within the "Weiterstadt WIRkt" . Participants included Uschi Kmoch (BSG) , Dieter Brombach (Education Advisory Board) , Dieter Veith (Senior Citizens' Advisory Board) , Karin Merkl (WEA) , and many other dedicated individuals from volunteer work, city administration, and youth services.
Invitation to the Future Workshop for Neighborhoods
The network invites all interested parties to the event "Building Neighborhood Support" on Saturday, June 14, 2025 , from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the media center of the city library . The aim is concrete ideas and inspiration on how neighborhood support in Weiterstadt can be further developed and made sustainable.
