The project aims to revitalize the city center and sustainably strengthen the economic location
The science city of Darmstadt has received a funding commitment of €100,000 from the state of Hesse's "Future City Center" program. With this funding, the Hessian state government is supporting a project aimed at strengthening the inner city and specifically stimulating activity in the city center. The funding awards, issued on December 17, 2025, represent a total of €11.5 million distributed across the state to 62 municipalities and projects.
Mayor and Head of Economic Affairs Hanno Benz expressly welcomes the decision: “We are very pleased with the state’s confidence in our ideas for a vibrant and sustainable city center. The funding will help us implement an important project that will strengthen our city center for the long term.”
The project centers on the currently vacant building of a former fast-food restaurant on Ludwigsplatz. Since no development is planned for the site in the foreseeable future, the city of Darmstadt is pursuing a new approach. The property will initially be leased at a low cost for two years and revitalized with an innovative usage concept.
The ground floor is planned to house a mix of retail, entertainment, and dining options. This will be complemented by an open outdoor area with a summer lounge, greenery, seating, and lighting. The upper floors will host workshops, events, and community activities. The goal is to revitalize the location, reduce vacancies, and provide a positive boost to the city center.
“This project is part of our efforts not only to secure but also to strategically expand the competitiveness of Darmstadt as a business location,” emphasizes Benz. Darmstadt possesses extraordinary potential that must be unlocked through modern and service-oriented economic development. Following its reorganization, the city's economic development agency will more effectively connect business, science, politics, and the public, acting as a central point of contact for companies, startups, and investors.
The state funding program "Future City Center" is supported by the Hessian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Areas. The program aims to support cities and municipalities in implementing innovative projects to strengthen inner-city areas.
