Geocachers and volunteers participate in environmental action around government center
Around the Groß-Gerau district administration building, dedicated volunteers once again worked to improve cleanliness. Approximately 30 adults and six children participated in a litter collection campaign on Saturday, March 7th. They cleared the area around the administrative center, the indoor swimming pool, the district hospital, and the Martin Buber School in Groß-Gerau of carelessly discarded trash.
Curious finds among packaging waste
The cleanup, now in its sixth year, was organized by the geocaching community. Participants collected numerous items of litter in the spring-like weather. In the ditch next to the district administration building alone, a folding chair and several buckets full of packaging waste were found.
Besides the usual trash such as packaging, cigarette butts, and numerous liquor bottles, the volunteers also came across some unusual items. These included a negative pregnancy test, a shopping trolley, a baking tray, and several bundles of waste paper. Even an abandoned shopping cart was discovered and, after the cleanup, returned to its designated spot by one of the participants.
Commitment to the environment and community
At the end of the collection campaign, the bin provided by Abfall-Wirtschafts-Service GmbH was completely filled with blue garbage bags and larger found items.
Adil Oyan, First Deputy District Administrator of the Groß-Gerau district, also visited the event and praised the commitment of the helpers.
After their work was done, the participants enjoyed refreshments and exchanged information about geocaching tours, new ideas, and upcoming events. Many of the participants regularly take part in the annual event, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in March.
The organizing team thanked all the volunteers and the waste management company for providing the bin and disposing of the waste. The city of Groß-Gerau's building and maintenance department also supported the event with buckets and grabbers.
