Painting, poetry and new music from March 30 to June 29, 2025
From March 30, 2025, the Kunsthalle Darmstadt is again devoted to the artistic work in the former GDR with the large -scale exhibition "Burned" In cooperation with the Center for New Literature Darmstadt and the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD), a diverse look at painting, poetry and new music is thrown - curated by Leon Krempel , Kurt Drawert and Thomas Schäfer . The ceremonial opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, March 29 at 7 p.m.
Three arts - an experience
The exhibition title comes from a poem by Kurt Dramwert and refers to the lasting effect of GDR past on art and society. The exhibition combines works by 20 painters , two sculptors , 40 poets as well as compositions from the GDR period. Work from Gerhard Richter, Ar Penck, Kurt Dramwert, Sarah Kirsch, Paul Dessau, Ruth Zechlin and Steffen Schleiermacher can be seen and heard.

A central element of the exhibition is a room concept that puts the picture, text and sounds side by side. Visitors experience a continuous "art frieze" of paintings and typographically staged poems - interrupted by ten hearing stations with sound art from the GDR.
The painting of the GDR - from avant -garde to protest
In addition to well -known names like Gerhard Richter (here with a rare painting from his Dresden time) or Ar Penck, the exhibition offers exciting new discoveries. The works address everyday life, landscape and still life, but also system criticism, nightmares and subtle forms of protest. In addition to painting, two sculptors are represented Joachim Kuhlmann and Peter Makolies
Poetry beyond censorship
The poems come from three generations of poet and show how much resistance and innovation potential the poetry developed in the GDR. The exhibition emphasizes the importance of poetry as a place of individual truth and linguistic freedom.
New music as a sly experiment
The new music rounds off the concept: works by Paul Dessau, Friedrich Goldmann, Jakob Ullmann and others make the creative power audible, which even existed in a heavily regulated cultural area. Hearing stations invite you to immerse yourself in the sound worlds of this time.
Framework program with lectures, tours and music
Accompanying the exhibition, the Kunsthalle offers an extensive program with tandem tours, artist talks and literary-musical evenings. The lecture "Art and Literature of the Underground in the GDR" with Ekkehard Maaß on May 8th as well as the talks with Kurt Dramwert and Hubertus Giebe on June 5th is particularly recommended.
