The Biebesheim Local History Museum offered visitors access to historical church records and genealogical research
The Biebesheim Local History Museum recently became a meeting place for everyone interested in family history and genealogy. Genealogy Sunday attracted numerous visitors who wanted to learn how to systematically trace their own family roots – a topic that is becoming increasingly important to many.
Genealogy , also known as family history research, is the scientific study of the origins and history of families. Using historical documents such as church records or civil registry documents, family trees can be reconstructed and familial connections uncovered – often spanning several centuries.
In Biebesheim that day, family researchers Thomas Schell and Armin Winter were on hand to answer questions from interested visitors. They offered comprehensive insights into family histories from numerous towns in southern Hesse, including Biebesheim am Rhein, Braunshardt, Erfelden, Erzhausen, Geinsheim, Goddelau, Gräfenhausen, Leeheim, Rüsselsheim, Schneppenhausen, and Wixhausen.
Their research was primarily based on church records, which were systematically compiled into several family registers. These allow for cross-municipal genealogical lists and make it easier to trace family connections across city limits. The information was supplemented by additional family registers – for example, from Gernsheim or Stockstadt am Rhein – as well as by digital genealogical databases.
Genealogy Sunday was therefore not only a treasure trove for amateur researchers, but also an example of how local history can be conveyed in a lively way.
