The city of Weiterstadt is implementing citizens' suggestions for redesign
The town of Weiterstadt is undertaking a comprehensive redesign of the Gräfenhausen-Schneppenhausen cemetery, thereby fulfilling numerous requests from the community. More green spaces and more shade were particularly frequently mentioned – concerns that are now being addressed with concrete measures.
New trees provide more shade and improve the quality of life
In recent days, a total of eleven new trees have been planted on the cemetery grounds. Wild cherry trees, linden trees, and a large maple are intended to improve the microclimate and provide noticeably more shade, especially during the summer months. The aim is to sustainably enhance the visitor experience.
Work will continue in 2026. Extensive tree planting is planned for the northeastern section of the cemetery. A row of standard wild cherry trees and columnar hornbeams will structure and visually divide the area.
Boulder garden and new recreational areas planned
Last year, some of the urn niche walls were upgraded with new roofs and planting beds. Currently, more walls are being redesigned.
Along the main path to the funeral chapel, a new area for a so-called boulder garden is being created. This form of burial is embedded in a perennial border and combines a dignified design with low maintenance. Additional water features, new seating, and a plaque with poems, inviting visitors to pause and reflect, are also planned.
The underlying concept has already been successfully implemented at the cemetery in Weiterstadt and has been well received by relatives there. The measures in Gräfenhausen-Schneppenhausen are part of an ongoing modernization of the town's cemetery facilities.
