Archaeological Museum and Caricatura Museum Frankfurt explain curious sensational find
A supposedly ancient vase with erotic motifs caused confusion at the Archaeological Museum in Frankfurt – and now widespread amusement. The bizarre find is not an authentic artifact from antiquity, but rather a work of art by the well-known comic artist Walter Moers.

Initially, experts believed the piece to be a ceramic vase from ancient Greece, dating back to around 420 BC. However, the depiction of bulbous-nosed figures in obscene poses seemed unusual. A more detailed analysis by Dr. Hristomir Hristov, curator of Classical Antiquities, and the investigative work of Director Dr. Wolfgang David finally revealed its true nature: the piece is from Walter Moers' "Asshole in Oil" series.
Martin Sonntag, director of the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt, commented on the find with a twinkle in his eye: "The vase is a wonderful addition to our current special exhibition 'The Comic Art of Walter Moers'. The find shows how skillfully Moers plays with art history."
The "Greek Fucking Vase"—a satirical artwork with an antique appearance—can now be admired until June 15, 2025, in both the Antiquities Department of the Archaeological Museum and the Caricatura Museum. The current exhibition there showcases the artist's multifaceted work, from drawings to sculptures—inspired by Dürer, van Gogh, Warhol, and others.
