Out-of-court dispute resolution relieves the burden on courts and strengthens social peace
Not every conflict has to end up in court. The arbitration board offers a proven way to resolve disputes out of court, cost-effectively, and amicably. This instrument has once again proven effective in the town of Griesheim : last year, four cases were successfully resolved there without going to court.
Arbitration boards are intended to relieve the burden on the courts – and they are succeeding. In more than 50 percent of Hessian mediation proceedings, no further legal dispute arises. "Disagreements and conflicts in private or professional settings can arise quickly. Often, those involved initially consider litigation. But not every dispute has to end up in court: The arbitration board offers a proven, out-of-court alternative for conflict resolution," explains Corina Landau, arbitrator for the city of Griesheim.
Volunteer mediators with an important task
Arbitration boards exist in every municipality in Hesse. In Griesheim, Corina Landau and Bernd Hörtz perform this task on a voluntary basis. The arbitrators are elected for a five-year term upon nomination by the municipal council and subsequently confirmed by the responsible district court. Their role is to mediate in certain disputes between citizens and to work together to develop viable solutions.
The arbitration board is an institution almost 200 years old that has proven its worth to this day. The arbitrators work independently, patiently, and mediatingly in a personal and uncomplicated atmosphere. The aim is to clear up misunderstandings, clarify the background, and find a solution that both sides can live with. In this way, social peace can often be restored.
Low costs and a clear legal basis
The work of the mediators is voluntary. The costs of mediation are significantly lower than those of court proceedings. They typically range between €25 and €60, plus any applicable expenses. A deposit of €100 is required at the start of the proceedings. Any unused portion will be refunded upon completion.
The procedure is regulated in the Hessian Arbitration Act. Citizens thus receive fast, competent and cost-effective support in out-of-court conflict resolution.
