Completion of the renovation work on Bessunger Straße and planting throughout the city area
The city of Griesheim has announced that the planting of a total of 30 new trees will begin this week throughout the city. Twelve new trees will be planted on Bessunger Straße alone – a visible sign of the completion of the extensive road renovation.
Sustainable tree species for the city center
The city is specifically focusing on climate-resistant species that can withstand prolonged periods of heat and drought. The following will be planted:
- Autumn Flame Maple
- American Sweetgum
- Columnar sweetgum tree
- Japanese Zelkova
- Purple alder
These tree species are considered particularly robust against extreme weather conditions and are ideally suited for inner-city locations. They also exhibit a high tolerance to road salt – an important factor for winter operation. To protect against sun damage, each tree is treated with a thermal white coating.
The flowerbeds around the new trees will also be sustainably enhanced: Special seeds will be used to green the areas within three years and create new habitats for bees and insects.
Another 18 trees in Griesheim districts
At the same time, the city's maintenance department is also active: 18 more trees are being planted at various locations throughout the city. A variety of species are being used, including Japanese pagoda tree, chestnut, rowan, sweetgum, alder, hornbeam, apple tree, and various maple varieties.
Planting locations include:
- St. Stephen's Square
- Playground “Old Churchyard”
- Youth Center South-West
- Place Bar-le-Duc
- Viktoriastraße and Willy-Brandt-Allee
- vineyard
- Agilatrudstraße
- Daycare centers “Sandgasse” and “Draustraße”
The planting campaigns are part of the city's concept for upgrading urban green spaces and a contribution to promoting biodiversity in urban areas.
