The Georg-August-Zinn-Haus will undergo extensive renovations starting in April
The city of Griesheim has announced that the city library in the Georg-August-Zinn-Haus will be temporarily closed from April 9, 2026. This is due to urgently needed roof repairs, which will take several weeks.
Closure and construction work overview
The library will open for the last time on April 9th so that visitors can stock up on reading material before it closes. The following week, parts of the collection will be moved to storage, as adequate weather protection cannot be guaranteed during the construction work.
The actual work begins on April 20th and is expected to last around four weeks, depending on the weather. Scaffolding will be erected the week before.
Offers are being relocated
During the construction phase, numerous services will be relocated. PC Help 50+ and services offered by the Senior Citizens' Office will temporarily take place in the lower church of the Holy Cross Church. Adult education programs will also be moved, including some to the cooking school building.
Further services, such as the language café for asylum seekers, are still being coordinated. The affected associations and users have already been informed.
Library uses break for modernization
The city library plans to use the closure period for internal improvements. These include reorganizing its collection and revising its wayfinding and signage system. Additionally, reading sessions in daycare centers and seminars on the "Onleihe 3" (digital lending service) are planned.
Renovation necessary due to damage to the roof
The Georg-August-Zinn House dates from the 1980s and has had damage to its flat roof for some time. The insulation is damp and no longer fulfills its function.
As part of the project, the entire roof structure will be renewed. An adjacent shed roof will also be renovated. The costs for the work amount to approximately 170,000 euros.
The city library provides up-to-date information online.
