Fourth-grade students at Wolfskehlen Elementary School experience a vivid lesson on water purification
How is dirty water turned into clean water? This question was the focus of an exciting field trip for 32 students from Wolfskehlen Elementary School the Griesheim wastewater treatment plant on Wednesday, June 11th . Classes 4a and 4b were able to experience firsthand how modern wastewater treatment works.
The children were accompanied by Jens Klump and Amar El Youssfi , employees of the plant who expertly guided them through the various stations. Divided into two groups, the fourth-graders gained insights into all the important steps of water purification – from mechanical pre-treatment and biological clarification to the purified effluent.
Sustainability explained in a child-friendly way
The students followed the demonstration of the wastewater treatment plant's operation with visible curiosity and many questions. Sascha Uehmann , the plant manager, was delighted by the high level of interest:
"The children's curiosity was clearly evident. It's important to raise young people's awareness of environmental issues at an early age. That's why we will continue to offer such hands-on learning experiences."
At the end of the excursion, the children took home not only new knowledge, but also a better understanding of how to use water responsibly – a learning morning that will surely be remembered.
