New bicycle street on Goethe Street is taking shape – inauguration planned for September
The city of Griesheim will begin applying the markings for its first bicycle street on July 21, 2025. Preparatory work to remove the old road markings will begin during the summer holidays. The new bicycle street markings will then be applied section by section – intersection by intersection.
In preparation for the construction work, no-parking signs will be erected in the affected areas. Vehicles must be removed from the restricted zone within 72 hours, otherwise they may be towed. The city of Griesheim requests that residents park their vehicles on private property during this period, if possible, or make appropriate arrangements if they are away.
Once the marking work is completed and the corresponding signage is installed, the cycle street will be put into operation as soon as possible. The official opening is planned for September.
First bicycle street for Griesheim
The Griesheim city council decided in February 2021 to establish a bicycle street. The planned route: from Georgstraße via Darmstädter Straße and Friedrich-Ebert-Straße into Goethestraße to the Gerhart-Hauptmann-School.
The project was preceded by a feasibility study and public participation in spring 2022. The suggestions from the citizens were incorporated into the further planning. An engineering firm was commissioned to develop the detailed plans. In addition, consultations were held with the police, the public order office, the city's disability officer, and the VdK (Association for Social Justice) regarding accessibility.
In May 2022, the city submitted a funding application to the state of Hesse. After the program was temporarily switched to the federal funding program "City and Countryside," the project was approved. Construction began on July 15, 2024.
