Marriage registrations and certificates can be partially applied for digitally
GRIESHEIM – Citizens can now handle four services offered by the registry office online: the subsequent registration of a marriage solemnized abroad , the application for a certificate of no impediment , the preliminary registration for marriage , and the registration for marriage itself . The online forms are available on the City of Griesheim's website.
“We are pleased that further services are now available online and that many things can be conveniently prepared from home. However, the visit to the registry office is not completely eliminated,” said the staff of the registry office.
Who can use the online services
This offer is aimed at individuals who are or were registered as having their primary or secondary residence in Griesheim, or who have their habitual residence there. A BundID account is required, which can be set up at id.bund.de. This requires a new German identity card, a digital identity card for EU citizens, or an ELSTER certificate.
Application process
The online forms require the uploading of personal data and supporting documents such as birth certificates or marriage certificates as PDFs or image files. The registry office then contacts the applicants and informs them which original documents must be submitted.
Overview of the new online services
- Registration of a marriage abroad : Requirements include, among other things, German citizenship of one spouse and a valid foreign document with an apostille or legalization, as well as a translation. Registration is voluntary and subject to a fee.
- Certificate of no impediment to marriage : Confirms that there are no legal obstacles to marriage under German law if the marriage is to take place abroad. Valid for six months.
- Pre-registration for marriage : Serves as a preliminary check of eligibility to marry; documents are submitted online.
- Registration for marriage : Both persons register with their Federal ID number. For marriages at the Griesheim registry office, a preferred date can be selected.
After reviewing the documents, the registry office will invite you to a personal appointment where the original documents will be examined.
