Theißstraße and Im Dürren Kopf are the next construction phases
As part of its 2024-2028 road construction program, the city of Griesheim
As Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl explains, the new measures build on the experience gained from the previous road construction program from 2019 to 2023. This program significantly contributed to maintaining the traffic safety and functionality of Griesheim's road network while simultaneously improving residential streets. In addition to resurfacing the roads, aspects such as increased greenery, additional trees, and flower beds were also taken into account.
Financial framework and selection of measures
The total budget for the 2024-2028 road construction program is approximately €6.4 million. This includes projects carried over from the previous program, such as Bessunger Straße (section 6) and Pfützenstraße. After deducting these projects, approximately €3 million will be available for the planned renovations.
The selection of roads to be renovated is based on several criteria. These include the structural condition of the road surface, necessary sewer renewals, the available financial resources, and concurrent construction projects.
Renovation needed in Theißstraße
In the southern section of Theißstraße, the road surface exhibits numerous cracks and breaks. Gutters have subsided, and curbs are partially damaged. Additionally, the road is heavily burdened by construction traffic related to the Griesheimer Anger project. Flooding is also frequent during heavy rain due to an insufficient number of catch basins. These will be added and connected to the existing sewer system as part of the renovation.
Two construction phases in Dürren Kopf
According to the city, Im Dürren Kopf street is also in very poor condition. It will be renovated in two phases to avoid disrupting the concurrent expansion of the Rewe supermarket. In addition to the road surface, the sewer system will also be replaced. The existing sewer cross-section is too small for the current volume of water from the industrial park on Flughafenstraße and can lead to backups during heavy rain. The renovation is intended to permanently alleviate this situation.
As part of all road renovations, old drinking water pipes made of asbestos cement are also being replaced.
Review of the previous road construction program
As part of the 2019-2023 road construction program, the city of Griesheim carried out comprehensive renovations on a total of seven streets, including Kreuzgasse, Jahnstraße, Donaustraße, and sections of Schöneweibergasse and Sandgasse. Delays in the construction industry meant that some projects were not completed or started until 2024. Nevertheless, the program's budget was adhered to. Surpluses from overpaid street improvement fees were carried over to the current program and factored into the new calculations.
Further information on recurring street maintenance fees can be found on the city's website.
