City council approves development plan – groundbreaking ceremony for development takes place
The Griesheimer Anger has achieved two key milestones on its path to implementation: On July 3, 2025, the city council unanimously approved the development plan , accompanied by an urban development contract and an updated cooperation agreement with the Griesheim Urban Development Company (SEGG). Just a few days later, on July 8, the official groundbreaking ceremony for the development work took place.
Planning as a shared success
The Griesheimer Anger is being developed on a former military site and is considered one of the city's largest urban development projects. The city council not only approved the development plan but also the urban development contract with SEGG and Sahle Wohnen GmbH & Co KG , which have been jointly responsible for the project with the city since 2020.
Erich Varnhagen (SEGG) emphasized: "The unanimous decisions show that this is not a compromise solution, but a win for all Griesheim residents."

Groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of development
On July 8th, Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl , representatives of SEGG, and planning and construction companies broke ground on the project. In his speech, the mayor emphasized the importance of the new neighborhood:
"Griesheimer Anger is a great opportunity for our city. With over 500 planned residential units, we are creating urgently needed living space – for families, seniors, long-time residents, and newcomers."
Construction to begin in autumn – development to be completed by February 2026
The development work includes the construction of access roads and the installation of underground infrastructure. The first above-ground construction work will then begin in Theißstraße in autumn 2025 – the plan is to build terraced houses. To minimize disruption for local residents, construction site access will be exclusively via the project site.
Klaus Rohletter from the executing civil engineering company Albert Weil emphasizes:
“We know that construction site disruptions such as noise and dust are unavoidable. We are all the more grateful to the residents for their understanding.”
