TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD celebrate milestone in visual computing
On September 4, 2025, TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD a special anniversary: 50 years of "Graphic Interactive Systems" (GRIS). This was followed by the annual Computer Graphics Night (CGN) , where excellent scientific work in visual computing was recognized and current research was presented.
GRIS – a success story since 1975
With the establishment of the first professorship for computer graphics in Germany in 1975, a development began that made Darmstadt internationally known. In close collaboration between TU Darmstadt, Fraunhofer IGD, and numerous spin-off companies, one of the leading centers for applied visual computing emerged. GRIS stands for research, teaching, and innovation at the interface between humans and computers – with technologies that make complex data visible and understandable.
Stage for scientific excellence
The Computer Graphics Night has been a highlight of Darmstadt's academic calendar for years. It recognizes outstanding dissertations, theses, and international publications in visual computing. In addition to the awards ceremony, the program offered expert presentations, insights into current research projects, and opportunities for discussion.
Importance for Darmstadt as a science location
The combination of university research, applied development, and successful technology transfer has made Darmstadt a hotspot for visual computing. Applications range from medical technology and engineering to urban planning and mobility, virtual learning and cultural heritage.
"50 years of GRIS represent 50 years of pioneering work in visual computing. The close connection between basic research and application, between TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD, is a model that demonstrates how science and industry can jointly drive innovation," said Dr. Matthias Unbescheiden, Director of Fraunhofer IGD.
