TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD celebrate a milestone in visual computing
TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD celebrated a special anniversary: 50 years of "Graphic-Interactive Systems" (GRIS). This was followed by the annual Computer Graphics Night (CGN) , where excellent scientific work in visual computing was recognized and current research was presented.
GRIS – a success story since 1975
The establishment of the first professorship for computer graphics in Germany in 1975 marked the beginning of a development that has brought Darmstadt international recognition. Through close collaboration between TU Darmstadt, the Fraunhofer IGD, and numerous spin-off companies, one of the leading centers for applied visual computing emerged. GRIS stands for research, teaching, and innovation at the interface between humans and computers – with technologies that make complex data visible and understandable.
A stage for scientific excellence
The Computer Graphics Night has been a highlight of Darmstadt's scientific calendar for years. Outstanding dissertations, theses, and international publications in visual computing are recognized. In addition to the awards ceremony, the program offered expert presentations, insights into current research projects, and opportunities for networking.
Significance for Darmstadt as a center of science
The combination of university research, applied development, and successful technology transfer has made Darmstadt a hotspot for visual computing. Applications range from medical technology and engineering to urban planning and mobility, as well as virtual learning and cultural heritage.
“50 years of GRIS means 50 years of pioneering work in visual computing. The close connection between basic research and application, between TU Darmstadt and Fraunhofer IGD, is a model that shows how science and industry can jointly drive innovation,” said Dr. Matthias Unbescheiden, Director of the Fraunhofer IGD.
