Initiative "Klimaactive" brings early bloomers to public beds-EU project promotes environmental commitment
The city is shown by its most colorful side in these weeks: thanks to the initiative "Klima-active in Groß-Gerau", 12,500 flower bulbs were planted on public areas in autumn 2024 -now they are developing their full splendor.
56 Volunteers supported the project in several planting campaigns in places such as Albrecht-Dürer-Platz , Nauheimer Weg , the Roman River , in front of the fire brigade , the district college on Dornberger Schloss and on beds in the city center , for example in Mainzer Strasse , Frankfurter Straße and at Schöneckenplatz . "The response was overwhelming. It was an encouraging experience to see how many people actively get involved in a flourishing cityscape," says Sabine Ziegler from Klima -active.
Environmental education meets species protection
The project is part of an EU-funded program that is implemented German Volkshochschulverband and the Groß-Gerau district college In addition to colorful crocuses, grape hyacinths (Muscari Botryoides) set - a local wild plant that is on the red list and especially bumblebees and wild bees as a valuable source of food.
"Planting and maintaining together not only creates beautiful places in the city, but also promotes biodiversity," emphasizes Angelika Lange Etzel von Klima -active. Early bloomers are a simple but effective contribution that everyone can also make in their own garden or on the balcony.
Next projects already planned
Another project follows in the late spring Frankfurter Straße on the historic town hall is to be planted with climate -adapted perennials . The project is professionally accompanied by the municipal green care team and the state company Hesse (LLH) .
Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau also praises the project: "This commitment shows how lived environmental protection can look like. Together we not only make Groß-Gerau more beautiful, but also more sustainable."
