Raised beds, herbs and vegetables promote environmental education with all the senses
A green classroom has been created on the grounds of the Friedrich von Schiller School. In three newly constructed raised beds, primary school children are planting carrots, spinach, sorrel, and mint – accompanied by enthusiasm, questions, and the scent of fresh herbs. The project combines environmental education with hands-on experience in nature and is made possible through a partnership between the organic herb producer LA'BiO!, the conservation organization Naturefund , and the educational initiative "Ackerhelden machen Schule" ( ).
"That smells like summer!" exclaims a girl as she plants a mint bush. Here, children learn through play how vegetables grow, what healthy soil means, and how natural cycles work. The planting activity is part of a program to promote environmental awareness in everyday school life.
LA'BiO!, a family-run company, provides the organic herb plants and supports the project as its main partner. "Children should experience how healthy food grows from a small seedling – and that fertile soil means life," explains Managing Director Danny van Leuven . Since 2008, LA'BiO! has supported Naturefund's work with over €755,000.
Naturefund has been committed to biodiversity and the protection of natural habitats for over 20 years. Managing Director Katja Wiese emphasizes: "Children learn here how valuable our soils are and that even the smallest living things, such as microorganisms, have a big impact."
The educational program "Ackerhelden machen Schule" (Field Heroes Go to School) accompanies the project and supports schools in setting up vegetable gardens. Nationwide, over 400 learning sites for sustainable nutrition and environmental awareness have already been created.
At the Friedrich von Schiller School, it's not just vegetables that are growing, but also the children's awareness of natural processes – with enthusiasm, curiosity, and all their senses. Paul, Emma, and their classmates eagerly await the first harvest.
