Permanent separation of cycle path and roadway planned from February 2nd
The city of Darmstadt will – weather permitting – begin installing guide rails along the cycle path on Neckarstraße and on Heidelberger Straße between Rheinstraße and Ahastraße starting Monday, February 2nd. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of February at the latest.
The markings from the traffic experiment were permanently implemented back in 2024. Since then, temporary barriers have separated the cycle path from the roadway. The installation of the guide rails now provides the final physical separation. New bicycle parking facilities are also being constructed. In addition, road narrowing elements are planned at two crossing points to further improve visibility and safety.
The total cost of the project amounts to approximately €210,000. Temporary traffic disruptions may occur during the construction work.
City permanently implements traffic experiment
“We are now creating a permanent and clearly identifiable solution that increases road safety and makes the streetscape more organized,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey. The implementation took longer than originally planned due to necessary coordination regarding procurement and permitting regulations.
The aim of the traffic experiment was to increase safety for all road users, promote cycling, and reorganize road space. The evaluation shows a clear effect: the number of cyclists on the affected section of road has increased by approximately 30 percent. Against this backdrop, the new traffic management system will now be implemented permanently.
