HEAG mobilo uses summer holidays for expansion – IGEL3 launch planned from 2028
HEAG mobilo will use the summer holidays of 2026 to make the "Goethestraße" stop on lines 3 and 7 in Bessungen accessible for people with disabilities. This is due to the necessary rail replacement bus service resulting from construction work at the International House. Part of the planned measures from the "Infrastructure Renewal along Line 3" (IGEL3) project is thus being brought forward.
Mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey describes IGEL3 as an important project for mobility in the district. The planning has been revised in recent years to take into account complex constraints and the needs of local residents.
Construction on the remaining measures between Karlstraße and Landskronstraße is scheduled to begin in 2028. The specific timeline depends on two outstanding planning approval procedures.
Construction at the bus stop will begin in May 2026
Preparatory work will begin in early May in the area of the "Goethestraße" stop. Since the platforms will be 45 meters long in the future, Klappacher Straße will be moved closer to Wolfskehl Park in this section.
After the Heinerfest, the tracks, which date back to 1970, will first be renewed during the summer holidays. Following this, the two stops will be made accessible for people with disabilities while the tram service continues.
Planned activities include:
- a tactile guidance system
- a digital information display with text-to-speech function
- a high shelf with a height of 25 centimeters
The new raised platform is five centimeters higher than at previous stops and is intended to make boarding easier for passengers with reduced mobility. The aim is to further reduce the gap between the train and the platform in the future.
At the same time, five overhead line masts are being replaced at the intersection of Landskronstraße and Ludwigshöhstraße. This will result in traffic restrictions in that area.
Canal construction in Moosbergstrasse
As part of the IGEL3 project, Moosbergstraße between Ludwigshöhstraße and Kiesbergstraße will also be upgraded for rail replacement bus services. This includes approximately 80 meters of sewer construction, including two manholes, as well as the complete resurfacing of about 700 square meters of roadway.
The work is expected to begin in June 2026 at the Moosbergstraße/Kiesbergstraße intersection and will last approximately six months. The expansion will proceed in sections towards Ludwigshöhstraße. Completion is scheduled for the end of November or the beginning of December 2026.
Further steps in the IGEL3 project
In the coming months, the City of Darmstadt and HEAG mobilo plan to provide more detailed information to residents and businesses. This includes submitting the planning approval documents for the barrier-free upgrade of the "Heinrichstraße" bus stop.
Furthermore, the construction schedule for the main project, planned to begin in 2028, is to be finalized in a proposal to the city council during the first half of the year. The aim is to modernize the infrastructure in Bessungen and keep the construction time as short as possible in order to minimize disruption to the neighborhood.
