Housing adaptation advice provides information on effective measures to combat summer heat.
Summer officially began on June 21st – but with the heat comes an increased risk of health problems for elderly, care-dependent, and single people. Extreme heat waves can lead to exhaustion or even heatstroke. The Groß-Gerau district's housing adaptation advisory service therefore provides practical tips for heat protection in everyday life.
Recommendations include shifting physical exertion to the cooler morning or evening hours and wearing light clothing. Drinking enough fluids is particularly important – a drinking reminder can help if needed. This could be, for example, a sensor that is attached to bottles or glasses and flashes regularly.
Medications should also not be exposed to direct sunlight, as high temperatures can affect their effectiveness.
This keeps the apartment cool
To effectively protect the apartment from heat, targeted measures can help:
- Ventilate by opening windows wide during the cool morning and evening hours.
- Automatic blinds or blackout roller blinds – ideally controllable via app or radio – especially on south-facing windows
These technical solutions are particularly useful for people with limited mobility or who are bedridden. Under certain conditions, the long-term care insurance fund can grant subsidies for these as home modifications.
