State funding secures project for better preparedness in the event of heavy rainfall
DARMSTADT – The science city of Darmstadt, together with the Hessian Ministry for Digitalization and Innovation, is beginning the development of a heavy rain early warning system (SRFAS) 2.0 . The project is supported with €550,351 in funding "Starke Heimat Hessen" program and has a total volume of €786,215.
The project aims to establish a central data platform that standardized measurement sensors, canal and water level monitors, and soil moisture measurements across the state . Based on this platform, a warning app be developed to provide early notification to citizens, emergency services, and administrative bodies.
Additional sensors also take into account the soil's percolation capacity , allowing for more targeted planning of protective measures for infrastructure, buildings and people.
The project is being implemented in close coordination within the city administration, supported by external experts. The project phase is planned for two years. The Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) is providing expert guidance for the project.
Climate Protection Officer Michael Kolmer emphasizes:
“We are very pleased that our heavy rainfall early warning system is now largely financed through state funding. The recent heavy rainfall events impressively demonstrated the need for comprehensive heavy rainfall management – including hazard and risk maps, targeted measures to protect infrastructure, buildings and people, as well as early warning of the population by the SRFAS.”
