Decision on fire protection and partial renovation is drawing closer – discussion on June 25th in the city planning and construction committee
The renovation of the Hegelsberg Hall in Sterngasse is approaching a crucial step: On June 25, 2025, renovation program developed by the specialist planning office will be presented to the city planning and construction committee . The focus will be on how a viable solution can be implemented given tight budget .
The multi-purpose hall, , is regularly used by clubs, schools, and groups , and also serves as emergency accommodation for the population in the event of a disaster. Initial renovations to the facade and sanitary facilities were carried out in 2011 thanks to a funding program. However, extensive fire safety measures outstanding at that time and have since only been addressed provisionally. As these temporary solutions are now themselves in need of renovation, the implementation of the existing fire safety regulations is now urgently required.
Partial renovation instead of a complete solution?
The commissioned consulting firm submitted a comprehensive renovation program in 2024 with a budget of approximately €10.87 million . However, the city's corresponding funding application was unsuccessful. The relevant committees subsequently requested a scaled-down renovation plan encompassing only safety-related measures. This so-called minimum program amounts to €4.22 million – but includes neither building technology nor energy-efficiency upgrades .

The administration emphasizes that such a decision could lead to higher repair and follow-up costs partial closures or as a complete overhaul . The city council will decide on this at a later date.
draw up a schedule how the hall's operations can be maintained during the construction period and what alternatives can be made available to the current user groups.
