Impressive rides, sunshine and a large crowd at the start of the equestrian highlight in Darmstadt
Under ideal conditions, the 2025 Hessian Championships entered their second day of competition on Friday at the Kranichstein estate in Darmstadt. With perfect weather, impeccably prepared arenas, and a relaxed yet focused atmosphere, the first dressage and show jumping competitions took place – all at a consistently high sporting level.
Particularly in the M* class show jumping course, numerous riders demonstrated excellent form. Several clear rounds were achieved in the style and speed jumping competitions, and even the favorite pairs remained composed. The courses were challenging – with technically demanding lines and tight turns – requiring fluid riding and a good sense of pace from the participants.
The dressage competition also got underway early. In the higher classes, such as the Intermediaire II and the S* double bridle test, several pairs impressed with harmonious, precisely ridden performances. The judges rewarded this with solid scores – a first indication of what the coming days might hold. The final decisions in the championship classes will take place this weekend.
The atmosphere on the grounds was consistently positive: families, friends, and equestrian enthusiasts took advantage of the sunny day to watch the competitions, chat, or simply enjoy the ambiance on the expansive grounds surrounding the estate. Many lingered until late afternoon, the food and drink stalls were busy, and interest in the competitions was high from the start.
Everything ran smoothly from an organizational standpoint on the first day of the tournament. The procedures were well-organized, the schedules were adhered to, and the grounds were, as usual, professionally prepared – a real plus for riders and spectators alike.
The decisive rounds in the championship classes will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The program promises further highlights with challenging show jumping competitions, dressage finals, and the popular supporting program. Saturday evening, in particular, with its traditional riders' evening and a spectacular show jumping event under floodlights, is expected to draw large crowds.
The initial impressions lead to only one conclusion: The opening event was more than successful – and makes you want to look forward to a strong sporting weekend at the Hofgut Kranichstein.
