Pilot project to promote physical activity enters the next round in 2025/26
Groß-Gerau district. The Hessian Physical Activity Check will continue in the Groß-Gerau district during the 2025/26 school year. Thirty-five of 39 elementary schools have already participated in the current school year, setting a clear example for targeted physical activity promotion in everyday school life . The project is part of the statewide initiative "SPORTLAND HESSEN bewegt" ( .
The movement check is aimed at third-graders and combines twelve cross-sport exercises into a one-hour obstacle course. Ball skills such as bouncing, throwing, and catching, as well as balance, jumping, and safely negotiating obstacles, are trained and assessed. The goal is to assess both basic motor skills and physical fitness levels – while simultaneously promoting the joy of movement.
Bridge between school, club and family
The results enable a differentiated assessment of individual strengths and support needs – both for school sports and for potential talent scouting in clubs. Teachers particularly emphasize the positive impact the Movement Check has on providing new impetus for physical education classes , especially in areas that are often neglected in everyday school life.
The project is coordinated by the Groß-Gerau Sports District in cooperation with the district's sports promotion agency . It is funded the Hessian Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Sports, Health and Care and the Ministry of Culture the Institute of Sports Science at Goethe University Frankfurt .
"The fact that so many schools are voluntarily participating demonstrates the great interest in targeted physical activity promotion," says Dr. Eckardt Stein school meetings and parent-teacher evenings , where information about the importance of regular exercise, were particularly valuable
New materials and training courses from 2025/26
Starting next school year, the program will be with teaching materials and training opportunities for teachers . These were developed specifically for the movement check based on previous experience and scientific findings. The goal is to promote motor skills even more specifically and sustainably in everyday school life.
