Pilot project to promote physical activity enters its next phase in 2025/26
District of Groß-Gerau. The Hessian Movement Check will continue in the Groß-Gerau district in the 2025/26 school year. 35 out of 39 primary schools have already participated in the current school year – thus sending a clear signal for targeted activity in everyday school life . The project is part of the statewide initiative "SPORTLAND HESSEN bewegt" (Sportland Hesse Moves) .
The movement assessment is aimed at third-grade students and combines twelve cross-sport exercises into a one-hour course. Among other things, ball skills such as dribbling, throwing, and catching are trained and tested, as well as balance, jumping, and the safe navigation of obstacles. The goal is to assess both basic motor skills and physical fitness levels – while simultaneously fostering a love of movement.
Bridge between school, club and family
The results allow for a differentiated assessment of individual strengths and areas for development – both for school sports and for potential talent identification in clubs. Teachers particularly appreciate that the movement assessment provides new impetus for physical education , especially in areas that are often neglected in everyday school life.
The project is coordinated by the Groß-Gerau sports association in cooperation with the district's sports promotion department . It is funded by the Hessian Ministry for Family, Seniors, Sport, Health and Care and the Ministry of Education , and is scientifically supported by the Institute for Sports Science at Goethe University Frankfurt .
“The fact that so many schools are participating voluntarily demonstrates the great interest in targeted physical activity promotion,” says Dr. Eckardt Stein school discussions and parents' evenings , where information about the importance of regular exercise was provided, were particularly valuable
New materials and training courses from 2025/26
Starting next school year, the program will be to include teaching materials and professional development opportunities for teachers . These have been developed specifically for the movement assessment, based on previous experience and scientific findings. The goal is to promote motor skills even more effectively and sustainably in everyday school life.
