Safe crossings and new lighting planned at the intersection in Wixhausen
The city of Darmstadt will begin implementing measures to improve traffic safety at the Hindemithstraße / Schönbergstraße / In den Wingerten roundabout in February 2026. The aim is to significantly increase safety, especially for pedestrians.
The plan is to install safe pedestrian crossings at the entrances and exits of the roundabout. An earlier implementation of the marking and signage work, originally planned, was not possible due to significant waiting and delivery times for the new lighting elements. e-netz Südhessen, commissioned by the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office, will now begin installing the street lighting in February 2026. The marking work will follow, weather permitting.
Access roads will be narrowed and better lit
"This measure stems from comments and suggestions from residents of Wixhausen who rightly complained that the current entrances and exits to the roundabout lack pedestrian crossings," explains Mobility Officer Paul Georg Wandrey. The very wide lanes are clearly oversized and no longer meet today's traffic safety requirements.
To improve the situation, the access roads will be narrowed using temporary barriers and equipped with zebra crossings. Additional lighting will also ensure greater safety for all road users during the darker hours of the day.
Accessibility will follow in a further step
Detailed planning for the precise location of a tactile paving system for the visually impaired is currently underway. Due to the narrow sidewalks, additional surveys are necessary in the area of the planned curb cuts. Full accessibility improvements are planned for a later date and will be combined with a partial removal of the paving from the median strips, a project currently under review.
