Guided tour of town halls and local democracy on March 22nd
The city of Griesheim announces that the city administration, together with the city archives, invites you to a special guided tour on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 3 p.m. Titled "Democracy on the Ground," the tour will focus on the history of local democracy.
From the old town hall to the present day
The approximately two-hour guided tour begins at the site of the old town hall, dating back to the 17th century. The meeting point is the entrance to the Zöllerhannes building on Schaafgasse. From there, the tour continues to Place Bar-le-Duc. The former town hall located there was occupied by the city administration in 1900, but was destroyed in World War II – as was the previous town hall.
The tour concludes with a visit to the current town hall location on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße. There, an explanation will be given of how local democracy is currently organized and what developments are emerging for the future.
Part of the nationwide Day of the History of Democracy
The event is part of the nationwide Day of the History of Democracy. Under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, this day will take place on March 18, 2026. The date commemorates, among other things, the founding of the Mainz Republic in 1793, the March Revolution of 1848, and the first free elections to the People's Chamber in the GDR in 1990.
